January is “Discover Michigan Skiing Month” and there is no better place or time than Michigan in January to discover cross-country skiing or Nordic skiing. Michigan has an abundance of cross-country ski trails and cross-country ski trail systems. Because cross-country skiing is a wonderful exercise, it is considered a heart healthy sport which is easy to learn. Most resorts and communities near cross-country trails have expert cross-country skiers who can offer Nordic skiing lessons for gliders at all stages from the beginner to advanced levels.
Although Grayling is often considered the cross-county skiing center of the State, cross-country skiers can find beautiful places to ski throughout Michigan, including at some of the downhill ski resorts like Boyne Mountain, Otsego Ski Club, Treetops, and Crystal Mountain. Imagine cross-country skiing the high country in Benzie County at the new Champion Hill overlooking Crystal Lake, Platte Lake, and Lake Michigan. Cross-country skiing is great family fun. Everyone in the family can strap on their skis, put lunch in their backpacks, and have a winter picnic in a Michigan forest or beside a frozen lake. Moonlight cross-country skiing on the trails and trail systems in Michigan is beautiful when silently gliding through the Michigan woodlands by the silver moon and the glitter of the stars to light the way.
Cross-country skiing is available near almost every Michigan City, including Grand Haven, Muskegon, Roscommon, Cadillac, Manistee, and Traverse City where there are trails at Sand Lake Quiet Area, Lake Ann, and the North American Vasa. The North American Vasa, where skiers glide through the Northern Michigan hardwood forests, is the premier cross-country ski race in North America. Michigan has some very interesting race trails like the White Pine Stampede as well as three locations (Traverse City, Charlevoix, and Lewiston ) on the national Women’s Winter Tour that also goes to Pittsburgh, Leigh Valley, and Winter Park.
Other interesting cross-country trails in Michigan are at the Tip of the Mitten region, Drummond Island, Porcupine Mountains, and Keweenaw Peninsula (Michigan Technological University Trails). The rolling terrain of golf courses also makes great places for gliders to find some excellent cross-country skiing like McGuire’s Resort in Cadillac. Some summer camps like Camp Hayo-Went-Ha on Torch Lake has some beautiful cross-county ski trails. North Muskegon State Park near Lake Michigan has cross-country skiing with some great views and interesting challenges worth exploring.
Start waxing the cross-country skis now and do not wait! Michigan winters are always perfect for cross-country skiing. |
